January Blast (Part 1)
Want to hit the ground running in January?
We tend to have a natural exuberance and ‘gung-ho’ attitude when we have had a break from our normal routine so having time off over Christmas or just being in a slightly different routine with different things to focus on can help us with a mind reset. We can feel refreshed and renewed and ready to tackle anything.
And, of course, there are those ubiquitous New Year Resolutions!
You are probably thinking now of all the good intentions you have started each new year with and how quickly they have fell by the wayside. Fear of repeating this failure may cause you to not bother setting any goals at all! However, there is some middle ground here. Let me explain.
Goal setting is standard practice in almost all aspects of our personal and professional lives these days, it’s synonymous with charting progress and reviewing why things haven’t been done or didn’t go quite as well as expected. Consequently, we could conclude that goals and goal setting are pretty useful. So, why I wonder, does it fill so many of us with dread?
Could it be that quiet but unwavering niggle of doubt? Doubt in our own abilities and capacity to succeed? Or maybe it’s down to doubt’s comfortable bedfellow – Fear. What would fear have to do with goal setting? Good question. Fear of failure is a powerful force to prevent us from feeling uncomfortable and dealing with the emotional and physical fallout from not attaining what we set out to do. Fear of success can be equally paralysing. Fear of what other people will say, do or think about us and our goals.
The January Blast 3 hour program is working with me, one hour per week, on a 1-1 basis either in person or on Zoom and looks at how to set goals that are better and more tailored for you personally. There’s a lot of information about goals and goal setting out there so we look at what ticks the boxes for you, what resources will help and how you will negotiate roadblocks, disruptions and setbacks.
We tend to think about what we want to achieve, what our goals or NY resolutions will be. Then we research and discuss and basically procrastinate until all of a sudden, it’s the end of January and we have achieved nothing.
Action. That’s what is important. Make a promise or a commitment to yourself. But think carefully about this. Go too adventurous and you will likely be disappointed, and you’ve probably got lots of experience of that. Go too low and you run the risk of getting board and losing interest. A half-hearted attempt will also lead to disappointment.
Get clear in the first place. Know your target and let’s work together to deliver it.
